Volcanic crater lake in Azores
The stunning Lagao do Fogo in São Miguel, Azores

São Miguel Island, the largest of the nine islands that make up the Azores archipelago, is a dream destination for travelers seeking nature, tranquility, and adventure. Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, this lush volcanic island remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, making it an offbeat destination with endless charm. With its dramatic landscapes, stunning crater lakes, lush forests, and quaint villages, São Miguel offers something for everyone, especially those looking for a mix of outdoor activities and serene escapes. Here is the perfect 3-day trip itinerary for São Miguel Island in Azores, complete with places to visit and hotel recommendation of places we stayed.

Who Will Enjoy São Miguel Island the Most?

Nature Lovers: São Miguel’s natural beauty is one of its biggest draws. Travelers who love hiking through verdant landscapes, exploring rugged coastlines, and soaking in thermal hot springs will be in their element here. The island’s volcanic origins create unique landscapes, from steaming geothermal sites to crystal-clear crater lakes.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Travelers: If you’re tired of over-touristed destinations, São Miguel is a refreshing alternative. It’s a destination that still feels authentic, where you can wander through quaint towns, chat with friendly locals, and discover stunning viewpoints with few others around.

Hydrangea lovers: Everywhere you look on São Miguel, you will find hydrangeas! They were introduced to the Azores in the 18th century, likely by Portuguese or other European settlers who brought them from their native regions in East Asia (specifically Japan and China).

Beautiful Places to Visit on São Miguel Island

1. Sete Cidades

Sete Cidades is one of São Miguel’s most iconic landmarks. This twin lake system, nestled in a massive volcanic crater, is renowned for its two differently colored lakes: Lagoa Azul (blue) and Lagoa Verde (green) separated by the bridge you see in the image. The best way to take in the breathtaking views is from the Miradouro da Vista do Rei, which offers sweeping panoramic vistas of the lakes and surrounding mountains.

2. Lagoa do Fogo

One of the island’s most stunning and remote crater lakes, Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire) sits high in the central mountains of São Miguel. With its unspoiled beauty and dramatic setting, this lake offers some of the best hiking on the island. The hike to the lake is challenging but rewards travelers with pristine beaches, wildlife, and untouched scenery.

3. Furnas Valley

Furnas is famous for its geothermal activity, with natural hot springs and fumaroles dotting the landscape. It’s also home to Lagoa das Furnas, a tranquil lake where you can experience the island's traditional "cozido" (a meat and vegetable stew cooked underground using volcanic heat). Be sure to visit Terra Nostra Park, a beautiful botanical garden with a thermal pool perfect for relaxation. There is also an old church here(Chapel of Our Lady of Victories) which adds to the charm of the lake.

One of the interesting activity we did here was drinking(rather tasting) volcanic water from water fountains. Interesteingly they have a pronounced taste of iron, and the midler tasing one felt like carbonated water. Check for the temperature markings at the fountains and make sure these are at a safe temperature to drink / taste.

4. Ponta da Ferraria

For a unique geothermal experience, head to Ponta da Ferraria on the island’s western coast. Here, a natural thermal spring flows into the ocean, creating a hot and cold water mix that offers a relaxing bathing experience in the middle of the Atlantic. We read that it's a fantastic spot for swimming, especially at low tide when the water is warmest.

When we arrived we saw the waves were crashing agaisnt spiky rocks and didn't feel it was a smart idea to swim in this water. Nevertheless, we enjoyed dramatic cliff views here.

5. Miradouro da Boca do Inferno

This viewpoint offers one of the most jaw-dropping views on the island. From here, you can take in the sweeping vistas of Sete Cidades and the surrounding craters. The hike to the viewpoint is moderately easy and is perfect for those looking for a short but spectacular hike.

6. Hydrangea Highway

The Hydrangea Highway in São Miguel, Azores, is a breathtaking scenic route where vibrant blue, pink, and white hydrangeas line the roads, creating a stunning natural corridor during the summer months. This picturesque drive, especially along the road to Sete Cidades, offers sweeping views of the island’s lush landscapes and volcanic craters, framed by these beautiful flowers. It's a must-see for visitors seeking to experience the island's unique and colorful charm. Be careful if you stop for a photo by the road-side and be mindful not to hold up traffic.

Top Things to Do on São Miguel Island

Dolphin at sea
Dolphin & Whale watching tour is an absolute must in Azores!

1. Whale & Dolphin Watching

The waters around São Miguel are home to an abundance of marine life, including sperm whales, dolphins, and other cetaceans. Whale watching tours depart regularly from the towns of Ponta Delgada and Vila Franca do Campo, providing a chance to see these magnificent creatures up close.

We booked this spectacular 3 hour catamaran tour for 65via GetYourGuide that we really enjoyed and we loved seeing Dolphins and one particular species of whale during our trip in August. The catamarn was stable and safer to be on than the little rib boat tours that were on offer. Check out the tour we took here.

2. Hiking

São Miguel is a hiker’s paradise. Trails range from easy walks to challenging hikes through diverse landscapes, including coastal cliffs, verdant forests, and volcanic craters. Some of the best hikes include the trail around Lagoa do Fogo, the trek to Salto do Prego waterfall, and the walk to Pico da Vara, the island’s highest peak.

3. Soak in Hot Springs

Relaxing in São Miguel’s natural hot springs is an experience not to be missed. Head to Furnas to bathe in the warm, mineral-rich waters of Poça da Dona Beija or visit Caldeira Velha(which was closed for visit during our trip due to some bacteria in the water), where a waterfall-fed hot spring sits in the middle of a lush forest. Both spots offer a rejuvenating break from exploring.

4. Canyoning and Waterfalls

Adventurers will love canyoning, a thrilling activity that involves rappelling down waterfalls and navigating river gorges. São Miguel has several companies offering guided tours, especially around the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park, where you'll find a beautiful waterfall surrounded by hydrangeas and lush, fern-covered cliffs.

5. Explore Historic Towns

For a taste of the island's culture and history, spend some time wandering through São Miguel's charming towns. Ponta Delgada, the capital, is known for its vibrant harborfront, historic churches, and lively markets. Ribeira Grande, on the northern coast, is another great option, featuring beautiful 18th-century architecture and a laid-back vibe.
